Belgian transport minister Jacqueline Galant on Friday resigned after the disclosure of a critical European Union report on the security of Belgium’s airports. Galant is the first political victim of the 22 March terror attacks at Brussels Airport and Maelbeek metro station.
The confidential EU report leaked the details of lapses in Belgium’s airport security. Galant stands accused of ignoring the report last year.
“The minister presented her resignation to the King and the King accepted it,” according to a statement from the royal palace.
Two more Belgian politicians offered their resignation in the aftermath of the attacks, but both requests were denied by prime minister Charles Michel.
