About 650 drivers in Belgium each year are fined for driving too slowly.
According to the interior ministry’s figures, 150 fines applied to motorway drivers who were caught doing less than 70kph. The other 500 fines were issued on smaller roads.
The Belgian highway code states that “no driver should block the normal flow of other vehicles by driving without valid reason at an abnormally reduced speed”.
Lahaye-Battheu said it was reassuring that speeding drivers were not the only ones sanctioned, as “driving too slowly can also be dangerous”.
