Total sales volume for e-commerce in Belgium has rised up to €9.1 billion (10%) last year. It’s a new record, according to BeCommerce whose annual figures reveal that 8.4 million Belgians made a total of 85 million purchases online in 2016, or slightly less than one order per person per month.
The figures also reveal that e-commerce revenue varies by region, totalling €5.5 in Flanders (+12%) and €3.6 billion in Wallonia (+7%).
“Online shopping is gaining ground,” said BeCommerce in a press release. In 2016, 16% of all expenditure was online, versus 14% the year before. While only 8% of all online spending last year was on goods and products, a whopping 63% went to various services.” These include anything from concert and sporting event tickets to bookings for travel and accommodation.
Slightly more than half of the online purchases in Belgium last year were completed using a laptop (55%), and 30% were made from a desktop computer, suggesting that Belgians are still wary when it comes to entering their credit card information on a mobile device.
