Brussels environment minister Céline Fremault will ban the use of disposable plastic bags in the Brussels-Capital Region, she announced before the Brussels parliament. The decision comes shortly after the European Union adopted a new directive aimed at drastically reducing the use of plastic bags.
Groen party’s Annemie Maes, who has been urging a ban on plastic bags for some time, is pleased with the minister’s announcement, and proposes that the Region start with pilot projects in several municipalities.
While Fremault is confident in her ability to foster the support of various stakeholders, she did not yet specify a time frame for the launch of the total ban.
